2016 Good Laboratory Practices Conference

Morning Workshops - (8:45 – 11:45 am)
BOD/CBOD/COD/TOC
Rachel Young and Lauren Stewart, Henrico County Central Environmental Laboratory; Brittany Goodwin, HRSD
The purpose of the workshop is to help improve the BOD/CBOD analyses for all attendees by sharing methods and ideas. Topics to be covered include methods; the capabilities of different instruments; membrane probes vs. LDO probes; COD
analysis for determining BOD dilutions; and TOC as an alternate method to BOD. All attendees, who perform the BOD/CBOD analysis, are encouraged to bring their SOPS and any questions/ideas they would like to discuss in a moderated round table.

Troubleshooting Chemistry Issues for Colorimetric Analysis
Sarah Leibenguth, SEAL
Phosphorus, Ammonia, Nitrate, and TKN methods will be discussed including sample digestion; troubleshooting issues associated with the colorimetric reaction after digestion; stability of reagents; interferences; and matrix matching.

VPDES Nutrient General Permit
Wayne Staples/Jason Spicer, DEQ
The workshop is designed for owners and operators of wastewater treatment systems who must comply with the Virginia General Permit for Total Nitrogen and Total Phosphorus Discharges and Nutrient Trading in the Chesapeake Bay

Afternoon Workshops
Measuring pH, Conductivity / Resistivity, and Utilizing Ultra-Pure Water Systems
Kelly Sweazea, Thermo Fisher Scientific
This workshop is designed to provide both a basic overview of pH and conductivity/resistivity sample measurement, as well as a basic overview of water purification systems. Ultra-pure water will be discussed in relationship to all three.

Microbiology Methods for Drinking Water Laboratories
Erica Fox, Fairfax Water
This workshop includes an overview of current drinking water regulations as well as a hands-on presentation of drinking water bacteriological methods for total coliforms by
Colilert and Quanti-Tray. Also discussed will be sampling, supplies, reporting, and QA/
QC practices and HPC analysis by the SimPlate method.

Fundamentals of Instrumentation Including New Methodology – GC/GCMS, ICP/ICPMS, IC
Kirk E. Lokits, Agilent Technologies; Dan Davis, Shimadzu; Richard Jack, Thermo Fisher Scientific
Presentations on fundamental instrumental aspects (theory/troubleshooting/maintenance) of GC/ GCMS, ICP/ICPMS,and IC as they all relate specifically to drinking water and wastewater analysis.
