Collaborative Biosolids: Fuel for Thought
Feeling stressed about the current status of your biosolids program? The world of biosolids is rapidly changing, and we must also change how we manage our critical solids handling infrastructure to succeed.  Discover the industry’s trends and prepare now for the challenges facing biosolids today. A distinguished group of industry leaders will help you stay in the forefront of the biosolids industry’s changing landscape. This will be your chance to collaborate with experts, peers, and network with exhibitors.  Attend the 2017 VWEA Education Seminar, Collaborative Biosolids: Fuel for Thought, to prepare for the challenges that are driving innovation and redefining how we utilize biosolids, optimize processes, and recover resources without the stress of unknown and unexpected changes.

Keynote Speaker: Tom Sigmund, Executive Director of Green Bay New Water
When Green Bay NEW Water decided it was time to look at their biosolids programs and understand where they want their program to venture, they first took out a clean sheet of paper. Starting from scratch, they looked at the entire world of biosolids – all processes, applicable variables for nutrients, energy, and disposal, with an eye on where they thought regulations would be headed.  NEW Water has dedicated itself to the collection, treatment, and reclamation of about 38 MGD of wastewater. Originally commissioned in 1976, NEW Water understood that their main biosolids equipment was subject to aging and strict federal air permit standards for their incineration system. The time to act was imminent to upgrade their biosolids system to continue to provide a safe, reliable and cost-effective service for their businesses and population. Through this extensive research and review emerged a biosolids system truly unique to NEW Water which incorporates many different types of treatment (anaerobic digestion, drying, combined heat and power, incineration with energy recovery, and struvite recovery) was developed. Green Bay NEW Water is on its way to a 75% energy neutral wastewater treatment facility largely through its biosolids program called R2E2 – Resource Recovery and Electrical Energy generation system.  Construction launched in 2015 and is expected to be completed with systems online in 2018.

After the Keynote speaker, attendees will be combined for a general morning session including a biosolids regulator update and panel discussion discussing the planning for sustainable resource recovery programs. Afternoon sessions to include:

Not Just for Fertilizer – An alternative way to look at biosolids from composting and Class A products to gasification and thermal conversion to energy.
Mining for Black Gold – How nutrient removal, resource recovery, and energy neutrality move the biosolids treatment to the forefront of our industry.
Making Your Good, Better! – A detailed discussion of way the industry can utilize its existing equipment and optimize processes such as dewatering, co-digestion, aerobic digestion, pilot testing.
